A MERSEYSIDE schoolgirl is proving a herself a rising star in two very contrasting sports – but with one skill paramount to both – throwing.

At 14-years-of-age, Lauren Tasker is currently the youngest player in the top division of the National Water Polo League.

On dry land, the Netherton girl is making a name for herself on the athletics’ field in the javelin where she has rapidly risen to be number one for her age group in the county.

Last year her precocious talent was recognised by a local borough, when she was named the ‘Sefton Star of the Future’ at an event held at Aintree Racecourse.

Her water polo adventure started two years ago when she was selected for the Liverpool Club.

She became immediately hooked on the sport and gave up basketball and netball to concentrate on the new activity.

This decision paid off handsomely when she was selected for the North West regional team and soon after the England Talent Development Programme.Š

Lauren, who attends Maricourt RC High School in Maghull, has now has progressed to the Great Britain Junior Squad.

The next step would be a place in the international team, surely something that’s not too far away.

Last season, she helped the Liverpool team

to become national water polo champions. More recently, Lauren played in the National Water Polo Division One, where she is the youngest player.

The teenager’s prowess at the javelin emerged when, without any real expectations, she threw in a schools’ competition and won it easily.

Following this success, the highly-talented teenager was invited to throw for Southport Waterloo Athletics Club and without much specialised training or technique found herself winning in inter-club competitions.

This culminated in her representing Merseyside at the Northern Counties Championship where she finished in a very creditable third place.

Her hope is now to build on this success and compete at an altogether higher athletic level.

At the moment she is training hard at both sports.

Fortunately the training is similar and she is also privileged to have the excellent help of professional fitness trainer, Phil Renton and his team at evo-fit.com
